I am looking at returning to college to finish my Geology (Physical Sciences) degree. I am 43 years old I am afraid that I am too old to go back. When I ask my hubby what he thinks it do whatever...I think I will continue taking business classes too that can help me with current employment. With my son being older he can learn to fend for himself a little instead of mom kissing his ..... you know what and babying him. Tell me what you all think. I say GO FOR IT!!! You are not too old -- lots and lots of adults are doing it these days because they are realizing that in order to advance in their chosen field (or to even go into another one) they need a college degree. Back when we graduated from high school (in the 70s and 80s), a college degree was NOT the necessity it is today. I will tell you that I went back to school when I was 43 years old (3 years ago). I took online classes and I received my Associates in Business AND my Bachelor's in Psychology. I consider it an investment that I made in myself -- even though, currently, I am not using either of my degrees because I am not currently working. Online classes worked well for me because I could do my schoolwork late at night when everyone was asleep and it was quiet in the house. Believe me, you are NEVER to old to return to college. I am SURE I got more out of it than if I had gone at 18 or 19. Be sure to check with the college's financial aid department for "GRANTS"...there are many grants out there for adults returning to school. They pay good and you do not have to repay grants like you do loans. Like Vicky said, a lot of adults are going back to school. Good paying jobs are getting harder and harder to find. Don't be intimidated by us - I've seen not a whole lot, but at least several returning students ranging in age from their 30's to their 60's in the time I've been in college, so it's nothing new, weird, or novel to us! And I agree with Toni - all of the returning students worked a lot harder and really seemed like they wanted to get everything they could out of it because they know how important education is. It was actually pretty inspiring, really, even if it did make the rest of us look bad. If that's what you want to do, don't even hesitate!

That way you do it on your own schedule and you are accountable to yourself. It helps too if getting to a campus is too hard. Just make sure you find an accredited university. That's how you'll avoid the diploma mills. If Smoke can't do it, then Rowdy sure can!!!

My sil went back to get her masters. She worked as a civil engineer. It was a 1 year program but you had to have been out in the working world for 10 years in order to be in this program. So in her 30's back she went. For 1 semester they were paired with undergrads in a business class and the only jobs most of the undergrads had held were at fast food restaurants. The undergrads learned so much from these people who actually worked for a living. Don't hesitate to go back. You will learn and grow and I'm sure your fellow students will learn from you too.

He would have had to gone back for 4 years to do what he was going to do. He said 'I'm too old, in 4 yrs I'm going to be 59 yrs old. I asked "him How old are you going to be in 4 yrs if you don't go back". So Melodye, whether you are going back for 4,5 or even 6 yrs when your done."How old are you going to be in those same 4,5,or 6 yrs if you don't go back"? I heard this some place else before I asked this question of my dad. The point is you'll be the same age in the amount of time it would take you to get through school as even if you don't go. But if you don't go, you just won't have the education but you'll still be the same age!!! P.S. You will be surprised when you walk into class and see people your age and older there too!!!MY advise is go!!! SPANKEY

I went back to school when I was 37 years old and when I entered the classes on the first day I found about 10 ladies who were my same age or a few years younger. We all became best friends during the next 2 and one half years and I was fortunate enough to be one of the first ones to get a teaching job. Now many, many years later I am so glad that I made that move. Will it be hard? Yes ma'am, it will be hard. But, the rewards are so worth it. I love Spankey's comment about how you will be the same age in 4 years whether or not you do this. And everyone is so right, I was an outstanding student when I went back to school. I performed so much better than I did when I was younger. Now, I am 59 years old and after a year without a job, I am about to go back into the field I love. My sister saw the principal of the school over the weekend and she told my sister that they were thrilled to get someone with my experience to teach the children. So see, Melodye, being 43, you are only a few years older than I was when I went back so GO FOR IT AND NEVER LOOK BACK. I SAY GO FOR IT! I'm not even sure i know what i'm going for but i'm taking classes regardless. You CAN do it! And yes you will be amazed at how many students are your age or older! i take alot of online classes, they are easier for me but thats your decision.
